Michael Sinelnikoff

1928-2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Sinelnikoff, born in London England on August 1, 1928, and leaving us in Montreal, Canada on July 1, 2024, one month shy of his 96th birthday. Michael was the son of Michel Sinelnikoff and Ludmilla Forester, well connected émigrés from Russia with Michael’s journey beginning as the godson of Jascha Heifetz, the dawn of his lifelong love and appreciation for music. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art as well as the Italia Conti Stage School, both in London, and in the early 1950’s moved to Canada attending Carleton University in Ottawa.

Michael was an acclaimed force in the field of performing arts in Canada, his talents spanning stage, film and television. He joined the CBC in Halifax but found his full expression in his permanent home in Montreal. In his 20 years as a CBC producer, committed to the development of English drama, Michael produced and directed an impressive 68 television dramas for CBC Montreal’s Teleplay series. In addition, he lent his expertise to directorial roles in stage productions at Montreal’s Centaur Theater as well as the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts.

As an actor he was best known for portraying Professor Arthur Summerlee in the television series “The Lost World” and for film roles in the “300” and “The Greatest Game Ever Played”. In addition, in 1984, Michael served as the first director of Quebec’s international ‘Cirque du Soleil” helping shape the early success of this legendary entertainment company.

During his long career Michael crossed the paths of so many seeking careers in the arts. He had time for them all and with both his warmth and passion left an indelible mark on each and everyone.

This tribute would be sadly incomplete without mention of Michael’s life partner, soulmate and latterly caregiver for most of 23 years.  Pierre Morin’s boundless love, unwavering support and utter dedication enhanced Michael’s life, brought him much joy and fueled his creative spirit.

On behalf of all of those who knew Michael, whether as a lifelong confidante or just those serendipitously crossing his path, we were invariably touched by his sincerity, insight and above all his genius.

“Farewell our dear friend and may you rest in peace.”

With heavy heart, I say goodbye and until we meet again to my dear friend Michael Sinelnikoff who left this place and his loving partner Pierre in July of this year. Michael was not only an extremely talented actor, director and creator in the wonderful world of the arts but also a genuinely gentle, loving, witty and incredibly wise man. I would always look forward to my visits with him whereupon arriving, a pot of black tea was waiting to be shared together. Then, we would chat about everything. Those many hours are permanently embossed in my memory and my heart. ❤️
