In Memory of Marilyn Franusiszyn
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marilyn Franusiszyn, who died peacefully on March 13, 2026, at the Royal Victoria Hospital after a valiant battle with cancer.
For many years, Marilyn devoted her professional life to McGill University, where she served as a librarian until her retirement in May 2014, after 44 years. A passionate believer in the enduring value of libraries, she found particular joy in the history of medicine and was an active and enthusiastic supporter of the Osler Society and the community surrounding the Osler Library. She delighted in connecting people with knowledge and treasured the conversations, friendships, and shared curiosity that flourished among students, faculty, physicians, historians, and fellow lovers of books. The Osler tradition of blending scholarship with humanity reflected the values Marilyn carried throughout her own life.
While Marilyn’s professional contributions were significant, those who knew her best will remember the remarkable compassion with which she lived her life. She gave tirelessly and lovingly to the care of both her mother and father, accompanying them through the challenges of aging with patience, dignity, and unwavering devotion. Caring for others was never an obligation for Marilyn—it was simply an expression of who she was.
Her happiest moments were often the quietest. She found deep contentment at home on her beautiful, treed property, where she delighted in watching the changing seasons, the birds and wildlife, and the vibrant rhythms of nature unfold just beyond her window. Rarely far from her side were her beloved dogs, faithful companions who brought her immeasurable comfort and joy.
A lifelong bibliophile, Marilyn surrounded herself with an extraordinary collection of books that reflected her boundless curiosity and love of learning. Her home was filled with stories, history, and ideas—each volume a reminder of a life spent pursuing knowledge and sharing it generously with others.
Marilyn is lovingly survived by her brother, Allan (Una) and nieces and nephews (Kimberly, Jeffrey, Michael and Chelsea). She was predeceased by her beloved sister, Suzanne (Sheldon), whose memory remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Her life reminds us that the truest measure of a person is found not only in what they accomplish, but in how deeply they care for others. Marilyn’s gentle spirit, generous heart, and love of learning will be remembered always and missed beyond measure.
