Carola Koch

1928-2024
Carola Koch Morton, Montreal, departed this life September 12, 2024, shortly after her 96th birthday. She was born September 4, 1928 in Recklinghausen, Germany, to Emilie Elise Neumann Koch and Ernst Koch. She had a younger sister Irmgard and younger brother Carl Ernst, both of whom pre-deceased her. She had fond memories of her cherished family and childhood in Bavaria.

Growing up in Germany, Carola was very athletic in school and enjoyed parties and dancing. She was very adept at language, eventually learning English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Latin, in addition to her native German. At one point, she studied French at the Sorbonne in Paris. She continued to increase her knowledge throughout her life with adult education classes at McGill University. Carola traveled extensively and enjoyed annual trips to Germany for the Rhenania Corps meetings, where she was a “little sister” of the fencing fraternity.

Carola moved to Montreal in 1958 to marry. She lived a cultured and gracious life. A popular hostess and excellent cook, Carola enjoyed her life and friends in Montreal. She was impeccably dressed and was a beautiful and elegant lady. Always interested in current events, she was a regular contributor to the editorial page of the Gazette. In Montreal, Milady Morton was a member of the 78th Fraser Highlanders, the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada, and the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul.

Carola is survived by the children of her sister Irmgard: Haden Yelin, Beaufort, South Carolina; Dr. Mary Ann Haden, Pawleys Island, South Carolina; and Carola Rayburn and husband Doug Rayburn, Dallas, Texas. In Montreal, she leaves behind many friends, particularly her devoted friend Gennie Garofalo. Carola’s ashes will be interred in her family’s plot in Linden, Germany, where she will join her beloved brother, parents, and grandfather, Carl Koch.
