How to choose?

For those who would like to have a viewing of their loved one during a funeral service and for those who will then proceed to a burial, choosing the perfect casket is part of the planning process. This final resting place is of significant importance, given that it will be where friends and family can pay their final respects to the deceased.

No matter if you are planning your own funeral prearrangements or if you are responsible for organizing a funeral service for a loved one, here are a few tips and tricks to make smart decisions that take your budget into account.

What are the different types of caskets?

There are 5 types of caskets, which are identified according to shape: the Parisian casket, the Lyon casket, the Sarcophagus casket, the Tomb casket and the Chest Casket (or American casket).

The Parisian Casket or coffin is among the most popular: it is easily recognizable due to its hexagonal shape, wider at the top and with a flat lid. If you are looking for an affordable coffin, you will generally find one in this category.

The Tomb Casket or coffin is similar in shape, although it has differences when it comes to the lid, which is more detailed thanks to several layers of wooden planks. It can also have a raised lid. It is a bit higher, and represents an elegant choice.

The Lyon Casket, also called “Lorraine” or “trapezoidal”, often does take the shape of a trapezoid, wider around the head area. A bit more sophisticated, it is not often used. The Sarcophagus resembles the Lyon Casket, but it has a flat lid

Finally, the Chest Casket is also often referred to as the “American Casket”, given that it is very popular in North America. This rectangular casket has a two part lid, with one part that opens or can be removed. This allows for the top portion of the body to be viewed during service.

The Average Price for a Burial Casket

The price for a casket in Quebec varies according to several factors. In general terms, mid-range caskets sell for around $ 2,500 to $ 5,000. For those who have a more limited budget, it is possible to purchase a casket for around $ 1,500.

There are, of course, luxury caskets available for $ 10,000, and even over $ 20,000, but these constitute exceptions. If you want to plan for the total cost of a funeral, take a look at our available funeral packages.

How to Shop for a Casket or Coffin

The first thing you should do is to keep your budget in mind; however, price is not everything. Other factors can have an influence over your decisions.

Shape and Size

Standard size caskets are made for standard size people. However, if the deceased was taller than average, don’t forget to ask for more information regarding the exact dimensions of the casket, in order to ensure that it is the right fit.

Similarly, you will want to stay away from caskets that are too big when it comes to burials; you must ensure that the casket dimensions and shape meet the requirements for your burial plot. You should know that should the unimaginable happen, there are also smaller sizes for children.

Materials used

There are several materials that can be used to make a casket or coffin, like wood, cardboard, plywood or different types of metal.

Would you prefer an eco-friendly casket? Biodegradable caskets could cater to your needs. For example, there are cardboard coffins available at an advantageous price, on top of being 100 % biodegradable. Plywood is another affordable option.

Wood is also an eco-friendly alternative, especially so when it is locally sourced, as it often is the case here in Quebec. Different types of wood can be used, like mahogany, walnut or poplar.

Finally, different types of metal represent a durable and solid choice. You can opt for the resistance of steel or a more luxurious metal like bronze or copper.

The price for a cremation casket can be lower. However, you will have to choose a material that can burn quickly; you cannot choose a metal casket for a cremation.

Design and Style

Choosing a casket really means choosing where your loved one will be viewed during the funeral service. Given that taste is unique to each person, your funeral service provider will present you with the choice of different designs.

When you are choosing a casket, think about the style. Ideally, you will want to keep in mind the deceased’s personality and taste for a symbolic casket selection. Take into account the fabric that lines the interior, the embroidery, the hardware (like the handles), etc.

Finally, the way the casket opens is an important aspect to consider for the viewing ceremony of the deceased. If needed, our consultants will be able to guide you so that you can make your choice among our different caskets for sale.
